Lyrics

Billy

Billy was a man with a gun in his hand and a tattoo of the devil on his soul
Raised on a kiss from his daddy's fist and the copper taste of blood in his mouth
Billy ran away on a cold spring day and took his sister from his father's dirty hands
They made their way from Chickamauga Lake and hit Memphis where he'd let her make her stand

And on that day when they made their getaway
they swore they'd someday bring
vengeance to the man with tears and blood upon his hands
and no mercy would they bring
no mercy would they bring

Billy signed up for an Army gig and left his sister in the hands of a friend
He blew her a kiss though a broken fist and wondered if he's see her again
The Greyhound whined through his wounded mind; to the coast he flew hoping to forget
With nothing but rage and a good aim private Bill held his end of the bet

And one fine day troubled Billy went away
To fight for God and King
In a dusty desert land he fought his demons in the sand
and no mercy did he bring
no mercy did he bring

Billy came home and found his sister happy and pregnant in the arms of a man
He gave her a kiss and felt a peacefulness he knew she held forgiveness in her hands.
Billy felt a hardness in his chest start to give way as he smoked a cigarette
He dropped the butt and looked away he decided it was time to forget.

And on that day two hundred twenty miles away
their vengeance did fate bring
near a lonely highway bar daddy overturned his car
and no mercy did God bring

And on that day two hundred twenty miles away
their vengeance did fate bring
near a lonely highway bar daddy overturned his car
and no mercy did God bring
no mercy did he bring
